A modern take on a classic boot

A modern take on a classic boot
This is my 6th pair of Fryes (and my last, I promise), and they are all American-made, classic styles. Most similar to them would be my Campus 14l in banana. I am a solid 9 in the harness and campus styles. Imagine my shock when I find myself between 9-9.5 in this boot! In the 9, my toes felt crowded. There was the normal heel slip, but then crowded toes. I really don't fancy crowded toes. Maybe this would diminish as the boots stretch with wear, but then maybe not. I would rather have more room, so I sized up. I have rarely read reviews where people size up in Frye, but there you have it. The new pair arrived today, and the fit does seem better. The right boot has more room than the left, width-wise. I suppose this is to be expected since these are hand-made and no two pair are alike. I do wish it was a bit more snug in the width, but I think it will be fine. The leather is unlike my other boots. "Stonewashed," they call it, and it is buttery soft and variegated in color. The shaft is roomier than my other Campus boots. The rubber lugged sole is wonderful; I so prefer the comfort of a rubber sole. The walnut was so dark that the stitch detail and variegation were lost, but the saddle is LOVELY. These boots are so unique; I've never seen anything like them. I really wanted a pair of Fryes in stonewash since I find them to look like a modern take on a classic boot. Also, I think the stonewash holds its beauty when scuffed and abused better than smooth leather. There is another version of this boot in Dakota leather with a leather sole, but I think it looks outdated. This one is more beautiful and could only be improved if the thread used for the stitching was a different color. The Camous stitch of old had a banana boot with green stitching. Those were head-turners, for sure. Why haven't more people bought this boot? Mine was deeply discounted and there are almost no reviews of this boot online, which suggests they didn't sell. I hope you find my review insightful, should you be considering these boots.******Update**** I decided the right boot was just too large, and it was noticeably so, even just visually. I exchanged for the same color/size and the new pair was perfect. The leather on the new pair is darker; more like a whiskey color. I actually prefer it to the first pair, shown below in my photos.

I have owned over 30 pairs of Frye's in the past 20 years or so. These do not disappoint! They could in fact be my favorite ones yet. The leather is premium (which is to be expected for Frye boots), buttery soft, with gorgeous detailed stitching and sturdy leather outer sole. These will last a lifetime if cared for properly. I am usually a 7.5 in all of my Frye's with the exception of boots that have a pointed toe. These run true to size. I have worn them with a medium thick sock and I still have enough room to wiggle my toes without my foot slipping out. The only downside to perhaps other buyers is this boot is not for someone with an athletic or thick calf. I am pretty petite (5' 2" and 100lbs). I have a "normal" size calf and I can slip these over leggins but jeans are a snug fit. This might change over time when the leather loosens up. All in all I am very happy with my new boots and can't wait to sport these through the Fall and long Winter ahead.

Sadly, these are going back for a couple of reasons. First, the shaft is very narrow. My lower legs are a normal size, and although these boots went on easily, at the top they fit too tightly to my calf. I could have worn them with tights (maybe!) but never with jeans, no matter how skinny. (See picture)

Also, the style was way too Western/rustic/boho for me. The color was way too variable, going beyond "stressed" and into what I'd call "leather tie-dye". (See picture) I have the Shirley Riding Plate boots and love them. Was very excited about getting another pair of Frye boots, but this just won't be them.

The packaging was suspect. Came in a plain cardboard box that was way too big for contents. Not a Frye box. There was a single sheet of tissue paper wadded into the toe of one boot only. There were two torn pieces of tissue paper in the box. One boot was folded in half and down in a corner of the box. Since my other boots were nicely packaged in a Frye box, I suspect that these were returns, although the sole showed no sign of wear at all. I don't care about receiving a returned product if I know that is the situation. I've bought from Amazon Warehouse before.

Good points: Nice leather. Quality Frye workmanship. Easy to get on (other than the very small shaft). Good height.

Love these!! I have wanted this style for a long time and when I saw it on sale for such a great price I jumped. The fit across the toe area is a little snug but knowing Frye products I'm sure this will stretch with wear. The calf area is snug but I'll still be able to wear these with leggings or skinny jeans. My calves are 13.5" around the widest point and I wear a size 7.5. If you are looking for a boot to fit a thicker calf I can recommend the Bed Stu Manchester boot. They have a lace up back that will fit many calves and the look is somewhat similar to these Campus boots. I love them so much, I bought 3 pairs!
The distressing of these Campus boots is beautiful, also. If you want a shiny polished leather boot these are not for you. If on the other hand, you like that imperfect finish on leather, you'll love these. A great boot- especially for the money. I have one other pair of Frye boots and several pairs of shoes and the quality is always impeccable. Hope this is helpful to someone...

5.0 out of 5 stars Frye Campus Stitching Horse - Banana
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2014
Fantastic boots. I ordered my usual Frye size and the fit is perfect for my narrow feet. Really comfortable with wiggle room for toes.
The banana colour is lovely, with marble like striations. The stitching pattern is subtle, being a similar colour to the leather.
I shall wear them with skinny jeans and above the knee dresses.
I have fairly small calves, (13" over denim), and the boots fit fine over my skinny jeans, though are certainly not snug. If wearing with bare legs, I need to wear long boot socks, which go well with this style of boot.
Very happy!

1.0 out of 5 stars quelle déception!
Reviewed in France on February 23, 2013
